by Elsie Clews Parsons (Author)

Zapoteca and Spanish Tales of Mitla, Oaxaca is a collection of folktales and myths from the Zapotec people of Mitla, a town in the Oaxaca region of Mexico. The book was compiled and translated by Elsie Clews Parsons, an American anthropologist who conducted fieldwork in the area in the early 20th century. The tales in the book are presented in both Zapotec and Spanish, with English translations provided for the reader. The stories cover a wide range of topics, from creation myths and legends of the gods, to tales of love, betrayal, and revenge. Many of the stories feature animal characters, such as the clever rabbit and the mischievous coyote, who often outsmart their human counterparts. The book also includes detailed notes and commentary from Parsons, providing cultural and historical context for the tales. Overall, Zapoteca and Spanish Tales of Mitla, Oaxaca offers a fascinating glimpse into the rich oral tradition of the Zapotec people, and serves as an important resource for scholars of folklore and anthropology. This scarce antiquarian book is a facsimile reprint of the old original and may contain some imperfections such as library marks and notations.
