Use Of Human Skulls And Bones In Tibet - Paperback

by Berthold Laufer (Author)

An unsettling, luminous field study of death and devotion in Tibet. Skulls speak of vanished rites. Berthold Laufer's Use Of Human Skulls And Bones In Tibet stands as a meticulous ethnographic study of Tibet from the early 20th century, combining close observation with comparative reflection. The book examines the ritual use of human remains and the cultural meanings of tibetan religious artifacts, set against the broader himalayan region history and the anthropology of death rituals. Laufer writes with analytic rigour and an unflinching human curiosity; his account treats sacred objects not as curiosities but as living statements of belief. For students of tibetan cultural anthropology and of comparative religion tibet, and for anyone drawn to unusual cultural history tibet, this work functions equally well as vivid reading and as an academic reference for tibetan studies. It is also a practical museum collection resource, offering context that helps explain provenance and ritual function for curators and collectors consulting the berthold laufer collection. Out of print for decades and now republished by Alpha Editions. Restored for today's and future generations. More than a reprint - a collector's item and a cultural treasure. Historically significant for bringing early Western attention to vernacular Tibetan ritual practice, Laufer's study helped shape museum classification and provided comparative material that still informs scholars of ritual objects. Scholars tracing the movement of items from shrine to display will find Laufer's distinctions and descriptive care instructive. Collectors who prize classic ethnographies will appreciate the book's balance of clear observation and measured analysis. Accessible to curious readers, rigorous enough for specialists, and compact enough to sit alongside classic literature in private collections, this edition answers the needs of casual readers and classic-literature collectors alike, while serving as a steady companion for libraries and museum teams researching comparative religion tibet and the cultural history of the Himalayan world.
