The Science Of Logic; An Inquiry Into The Principles Of Accurate Thought And Scientific Method (Volume I) - Paperback

by Peter Coffey (Author)

Precision of thought, re-examined. Clear thought sharpens every argument. Peter Coffey's The Science Of Logic is a lucid, rigorous logic philosophy textbook that sets out the principles of accurate thought and functions as a practical scientific reasoning guide. Written with scholastic attention to form and an insistence on clarity, it moves from the nature of concepts through the architecture of valid inference, showing how deductive logic study underpins reliable conclusion. The prose is purposeful rather than ornamental: technical rigour and plain exposition sit side by side, making the work suitable both for a university philosophy course and for sustained logic for scholars. As a companion to studies in formal logic, the volume rewards readers who want method rather than metaphor, equipping them with the tools to analyse argument, test assumptions and distinguish sound inference from mere opinion. A classic logic treatise emerging from early twentieth century philosophy, Coffey's book occupies an understated place in the history of logic and in conversations about the foundations of scientific method. Its concerns - clarity of definition, the limits of induction and the discipline of deduction - reflect the same methodological anxieties found in the works of John Stuart Mill while pointing toward the more formalised studies that followed. Its clear method and steady pace make it useful for independent study and for seminars that trace the movement from nineteenth-century empiricism to twentieth-century formal approaches. Librarians and collectors prize volumes that preserve the intellectual texture of a moment in thought; this title rewards both close study and quiet reading. Out of print for decades and now republished by Alpha Editions. Restored for today's and future generations. More than a reprint - a collector's item and a cultural treasure. Accessible to curious readers and robust enough for collectors and academics, this edition bridges the demands of classroom teaching and private reflection: an approachable companion for newcomers and a handsome, dependable reference for anyone assembling a library of classic works in logical theory.
