The Rainmaker's Child - Paperback

by S. J. Gruberg (Author)

1944

World War II has surged to its climax. Railways are jammed, fairgrounds are prisons, and no one believes in magic.

Izzy Johnson is a wolf-girl in her father's carnival, the only life she's ever known. Her shocking appearance keeps Les Bouffons afloat, but Izzy is desperate to be free of the show and her Rainmaker father's magic. Could the war that threatens to destroy their carnival be Izzy's one ticket out?

Markis Breslau is German-Jewish refugee, determined to find the family he left behind and the brother he swore to protect. Hiding in plain sight as the Tattooed Man, Markis follows the western fair circuit - the last place his brother was seen alive. For Markis, the show must go on.

When both carnivals are summoned to a seaside mansion, Izzy's and Markis's fates collide, dark secrets surface, and the Rainmaker's power takes an ominous turn that changes everything they thought was real. A pack of white wolves appears in the meadow, carousels and coasters rise from the sea, and nothing is as it seems. As the mysterious new show's debut draws near, Izzy and Markis are forced to decide how much they are willing to sacrifice to find the lives they lost.

A love letter to all who have ached for belonging, drenched in the forests, ferns, and floods of the Pacific Northwest, The Rainmaker's Child explores love over loss, the beauty of "other," and the resilience of the human spirit to find its way home.
