The Ragged Trousered Philanthropists (1914) - Hardcover

by Robert Tressell (Author)

The Ragged Trousered Philanthropists is a novel written by Robert Tressell and published in 1914. The book is a fictional account of the lives of a group of working-class people in the town of Mugsborough, England, during the early 20th century. The story follows the struggles of a group of painters and decorators who work for a wealthy contractor named Rushton. The workers are constantly exploited and underpaid, and their lives are made even more difficult by the high cost of living and the lack of job security.Throughout the book, Tressell uses the characters to highlight the injustices and inequalities of the capitalist system. He shows how the workers are trapped in a cycle of poverty and debt, constantly struggling to make ends meet. He also explores the idea of class consciousness and the need for workers to unite and fight for their rights.Despite its serious themes, The Ragged Trousered Philanthropists also contains moments of humor and satire. Tressell uses these moments to poke fun at the hypocrisy of the middle and upper classes, who claim to be philanthropic and charitable while exploiting the working class.Overall, The Ragged Trousered Philanthropists is a powerful and thought-provoking book that remains relevant today. It is a classic of socialist literature and a must-read for anyone interested in social justice and workers' rights. This scarce antiquarian book is a facsimile reprint of the old original and may contain some imperfections such as library marks and notations.
