The Folk-Lore Society For Collecting And Printing Relics Of Popular Antiquities - Paperback

by Unknown (Author)

Unearth the weathered voices of rural England. A vanished past speaks again. This British folklore collection, presented as a Victorian folklore anthology, gathers printed relics issued among folklore society publications: a popular antiquities book that honours seasonal rites, village lore, fairy tales and legends, and the customs and superstitions woven through everyday living. The entries read like field-notes and local reports, preserving dialect rhythm and incidental detail as much as narrative, so that the reader encounters speech, belief and action together. It records folk traditions of England with the dual aim of story and preservation - capturing rural British customs, oral testimony and local ritual in language at once immediate and archival. Neither merely ornamental nor academically dry, the volume sits between storytelling and scholarship, approachable for casual readers yet rich in detail for researchers and historians, and rewarding to anyone who loves the uncanny, the quaint, and the human textures that once underpinned community life. Republished by Alpha Editions in a careful modern edition, this volume preserves the spirit of the original while making it effortless to enjoy today - a heritage title prepared for readers and collectors alike. As a witness to nineteenth century England, it plays a distinct role in oral history preservation: the notes and collected accounts illuminate how belief, custom and communal imagination shaped daily routines, festival calendars and neighbourly obligation. The book's material has proved useful across disciplines - history, folklore studies, anthropology - and offers primary-source colour that helps researchers and historians trace cultural continuities and local change. For casual readers it delivers curious tales and unexpected insights; for collectors of Victorian literature and social history it supplies period character and provenance. Compact enough for an afternoon read, resonant enough to command a shelf, it makes a thoughtful folklore enthusiasts gift and a quietly striking addition to libraries and home collections.
