Sound And Symbol In Chinese - Paperback

by Bernhard Karlgren (Author)

Sound and symbol: Karlgren's masterly inquiry into how speech and script meet. Sound meets meaning in Chinese. A lucid, forensic linguistics reference book born of early 20th century linguistics, it examines chinese writing systems with patient china language analysis and a keen ear for phonetic patterning. Karlgren moves between comparative philology and close observation, tracing the etymology of Chinese as it reveals itself across inscriptions, variants and later conventions. The result is a clear-minded chinese characters study that treats the script as evidence - a place where language and symbolism record histories of speech and thought. It is rigorous without being dry, balancing technical reconstruction with readable exposition; readers encounter sustained claims about phonetic regularities, graphic invention and semantic shift, each argued from the surviving forms rather than from speculation. The book functions as both a practical reference for scholars and an invitation for curious readers to rediscover the logic of written signs. More than an academic exercise, Sound and Symbol shaped generations of study and still reads with crisp relevance. As one of the enduring bernhard karlgren works, it occupies a pivotal place in the history of sinology and comparative philology, and it remains an essential academic language resource for scholars and for sinology students. Casual readers fascinated by chinese language history or the material life of signs will find lucid, often surprising explanations; classic-literature collectors and aficionados of intellectual history will prize its historical status and austere clarity. Its influence on subsequent china language analysis and its role in the development of method make it both a readable treatise and a document of scholarly history.
