"This is profound, evocative stuff-Joel is not only a great player, he's a great writer. Everyone should read this book." - Mike Stern

What happens at the intersection of transcendent genius and human fragility?

In Pity the Genius, acclaimed guitarist and composer Joel Harrison takes you on a 33-track journey through the souls of the mavericks who redefined American music. This isn't just a history of the guitar; it is a deep-dive into the "obscure mastery" and tumultuous lives of the men and women who played like gods but lived as mortals.

From the volcanic, rediscovered fire of Arthur Rhames to the miraculous recovery of Pat Martino and the "Godmother of Rock" Sister Rosetta Tharpe, Harrison peels back the curtain on the triumphs and tragedies that shaped the American sound.

Inside this curated collection of musical essays, you'll discover:

• The Unsung Icons: Why the world nearly forgot geniuses like Emily Remler and Danny Gatton.
• The Household Names, Reimagined: Fresh perspectives on the improvisational brilliance of Jerry Garcia, the social activism of Curtis Mayfield, and the poetic tunings of Joni Mitchell.
• The 33-Track Blueprint: A curated roadmap through Jazz, Rock, Blues, Country, and Folk that serves as a masterclass in listening.
• The Human Cost of Greatness: A raw look at the addiction, mental health struggles, and societal barriers that often haunt the highly creative.

Whether you are a professional player looking for fresh inspiration or a music lover who wants to hear the stories behind the strings, Pity the Genius is an intimate, illuminating tribute to the spirits who gave everything to their craft.

"Deep, deep stuff, sometimes profoundly sad, sometimes ecstatic, but always illuminating." - Peter Watrous, former NY Times Jazz Critic
