Oxford Rowing; A History Of Boat-Racing At Oxford From The Earliest Times, With A Record Of The Races Compiled Principally From Official Sources - Paperback

by W. E. Sherwood (Author)

Oxford Rowing is W. E. Sherwood's lucid chronicle of boat-racing at Oxford, tracing contests from the earliest recorded matches to the ritualised intensity of the annual university boat races. A sporting saga on water. Meticulously compiled principally from official sources, Sherwood gathers race records and contemporary observation into a single readable account of Oxford rowing history. The narrative situates the Oxford-Cambridge rivalry within the social rhythms of nineteenth century England, showing how Victorian era sports and the rise of British university athletics shaped college life and public spectacle. As a work of rowing non-fiction it balances empirical detail with lively description, appealing to sports history enthusiasts and rowing club collectors while offering an illustrated rowing history sensibility that resonates with casual readers. Sherwood's methodical treatment of results and seasons makes the book an authoritative reference for club historians and archivists; his clear, disciplined prose keeps the story approachable rather than technical. Sherwood's work is more than a ledger of winners: it preserves the rituals, language and social texture that made rowing central to Oxford University tradition and to wider British sports history. For researchers and general readers alike it supplies primary-source grounding on how crew contests became public ceremony, and it illuminates the tastes, uniforms and seasonality that defined nineteenth century England's sporting year. The book also offers context on how informal collegiate rivalries hardened into organised fixtures, shaping expectations around training, attendance and local pride. Casual readers can savour vivid anecdotes; classic-literature collectors can prize a faithful text that records both results and the cultural life around them. Republished by Alpha Editions in a careful modern edition, this volume preserves the spirit of the original while making it effortless to enjoy today - a heritage title prepared for readers and collectors alike. A welcome addition to sporting libraries and private collections.
