Exploring the Roots of Jewish Tradition Through Language, History, and Liturgy

In Links to Our Legacy, Mitchell First examines Hebrew language, Jewish history, and liturgical practices. This collection of essays, drawn from years of meticulous research, addresses specific mysteries and questions surrounding the origins of Jewish customs and texts.

Key Questions Explored in the Book:

2. Jewish Liturgy:

   • How did the Aleinu prayer evolve, and what deeper meanings does its language convey?
   • Why are specific Torah portions paired with Haftarah readings, and what is the historical origin of this practice?
   • How did the Shema become one of the central prayers in Jewish liturgy, and what is its significance in the Kedushah?

3. Biblical Mysteries:

   • Why does God command Moses to remove his shoes at the burning bush, and what does this act symbolize?
   • How do archaeological findings, like the Gezer calendar, help us understand the agricultural cycles in the Torah?
   • Why is the Book of Esther missing from the Dead Sea Scrolls, and what does this absence suggest about its historical reception?

4. Holidays and Rituals:

   • What is the historical origin of Rosh Hashanah's Yom Teruah (Day of Shofar Blasts), and how did its observance evolve?
   • Where do our modern Hanukkah customs, like menorah lighting and blessings, originate?
   • How did the calendar structure of the Jewish holidays develop, and what historical events influenced it?

5. Cultural Practices and Identity:

   • What is the significance of the solidification of the Hebrew alphabet in shaping Jewish cultural identity?
   • How does the Torah's view of naming reflect broader spiritual and cultural values?
   • What ethical lessons can we draw from biblical principles like tza'ar ba'alei chaim (protection of animals)?
