COMMITMENT: The coldest game in the history of Arrowhead Stadium took place on January 13, 2024. The Kansas City Chiefs hosted the Miami Dolphins in the wild-card playoff game with a temperature of minus 4-degrees and a wind-chill of minus 27. Patrick Mahomes' helmet famously broke as the frozen plastic cracked on a hard tackle. Such commitment from players is expected but the month of March revealed something new. Research Medical Center reported that some of the people attending that game were having fingers and toes amputated due to frostbite. The hospital noted that more surgeries were expected as the "injuries evolve." The commitment of football fans to risk amputations in support of their team should challenge every Christian to evaluate our level of commitment to Christ and His Kingdom. PARENTING: The Hecht Museum in Haifa, Israel returned a repaired jar to display about a month after it was broken in August 2024. A 4-year-old boy accidentally knocked it over and it took a team of restoration experts to piece it back together. The Bronze-Era jar, dating back to between 2200 and 1500 B.C., was one of the only containers its size that was still intact when it was discovered. That relic survived some four millennia and had been on display for 35 years but it only took one kid a single visit at the museum to destroy it. Beaumont Enterprise, 9/12/24, p.A2

TRANSFORMATION: During the summer of 2008, John Elmore worked with the Kuku tribe in South Sudan. Addiction to lethal moonshine was epidemic as their country had been decimated by the Sudanese from the north. Young men were killed and virtually every building was destroyed. The fields for farming were booby-trapped with land mines so people drank from stills that used ethanol, embalming fluid, or anything else that could alter the mind. Hopelessness prevailed, yet some were becoming sober through Christ. A little church was formed under a mango tree and former drunks worshiped the Savior who was transforming them. An elderly man called Mr. C had survived the war but nearly lost the spiritual battle of addiction. He showed up for worship one day with a land-mine harp. It had been gutted of explosives, covered in goatskin, and strung to make a harp. The former weapon of death now yielded beautiful music to celebrate eternal life and the transformation Jesus brings.
