by Comer Taylor (Author)

Unveiling HBCUs: A Historical Journey and Impact on Graduates' Triumphs, Academic Excellence, Athletic Achievements, and Strides in Equality.

Dive into the fascinating story of Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) with HBCU Greatness. This compelling book elucidates the origins of HBCUs, their establishment by institutions such as the Methodist Church, former slaves, Quakers, the African American Baptist Church, and even the Negro Infantry of the Civil War using the Morrill Acts of 1862 and 1890. The narrative unfolds against the backdrop of segregation, particularly in the deep south, revealing the resilience and resolve of early graduates amidst little state support.

HBCU Greatness spotlights the remarkable achievements of these institutions, including the production of over 130 African American military generals/admirals through ROTC programs. It further illustrates the academic prowess and diversity of today's HBCUs, showcasing the myriad of programs offered to students, thus enabling them to excel in various fields.

In addition to academics, the book also delves into the athletic accomplishments of HBCUs from the "Golden Era" to the present day. It contrasts the feats of HBCU NFL players with those from Predominantly White Institutions (PWIs), and highlights the significant role of HBCU athletes in giving America a dominant presence in many of the Summer Olympic Games.

The narrative doesn't shy away from the hard truths either. It sheds light on the financial disparities that exist in college sports, especially in terms of the large number of athletic scholarships offered to African Americans and the lack of equal opportunity for leadership positions at PWIs.

In essence, HBCU Greatness is an enlightening exploration of the historical journey of HBCUs, the triumphs of their graduates, their academic excellence, and athletic accomplishments. It also casts a critical eye on the strides made towards equality, thus making it a must-read for anyone interested in understanding the significant role of HBCUs in shaping history, education, and society.
