EMPOWERING PUBLIC LIBRARIES WITH ChatGPT: A Practical Guide to AI-Driven Services and Operations - Paperback

by Hesham Mohamed Elsherif (Author), Salwa Elmeawad (Author)

Public libraries have always adapted to the evolving information landscape, from catalog cards to integrated online systems, and from reference desks to digital portals that connect communities with a world of knowledge. As artificial intelligence emerges as the newest frontier in information services, it offers public libraries an unprecedented opportunity to enrich and expand the services they provide to patrons. Among the most notable AI developments is ChatGPT-a large language model with the capacity to understand natural language queries and generate coherent, context-aware responses.

This book, Empowering Public Libraries with ChatGPT: A Practical Guide to AI-Driven Services and Operations, was born out of conversations with librarians, technologists, and community leaders who observed the transformative potential of AI in library settings. By tapping into ChatGPT's unique capabilities, libraries can enhance traditional services, streamline daily tasks, and cultivate new forms of engagement with their patrons. Yet, despite the growing interest, many library professionals have voiced concerns regarding effective implementation, ethical considerations, data privacy, and long-term sustainability.

Our goal is to provide a roadmap that illuminates both the possibilities and challenges of AI-driven services. In these pages, you will find insights into the fundamentals of ChatGPT, strategies for integrating AI into library systems, and real-world case studies that showcase successes and lessons learned. By offering concrete examples, policy templates, and step-by-step instructions, we hope to equip librarians, administrators, and other stakeholders with the knowledge and confidence needed to navigate this rapidly changing technological landscape.

Throughout the writing process, we have aimed to keep library values - equity, confidentiality, and the free exchange of ideas - at the forefront. Technology, at its best, should advance these core principles rather than undermine them. As you read, we encourage you to consider how ChatGPT might further your library's mission, whether it is through interactive patron services, streamlined operations, or innovative programming that fosters community connections.

We invite you to explore these chapters with an open mind and a critical eye, recognizing that the success of AI in libraries depends on human ingenuity, thoughtful planning, and ongoing collaboration across the profession. Whether you are a seasoned tech enthusiast or just beginning to explore AI, may this guide serve as a valuable resource to help you leverage ChatGPT responsibly and creatively for the benefit of your community.

This book is designed to appeal to a broad spectrum of library professionals and stakeholders interested in the opportunities and challenges that come with introducing AI-powered tools, like ChatGPT, into a public library setting.
