BACKFIRE

Someone is trying to kill Martin Powers, and he has no idea why. He has no enemies. He certainly isn't rich. In fact, he's just a route salesman for a cosmetic company-a man of simple means. But someone has tampered with his steering and almost causes him to swerve off the road and into the canyon. Martin assumes it was just an accident until his mechanic tells him otherwise. Now he has a pock-marked man following him, and he finally realizes his life is in danger. His wife Angela, worried for his safety, calls in Bannerman, a local cop. But there is nothing he can do... until the pock-marked man strikes again!

NEVER KILL A COP!

Thirteen true crime stories from the pages of Revealing Detective, Official Detective Stories and Men magazines. Two cops take after a speeding car, and one of them is shot. Then it's a race against time to track down the fleeing criminals before they can escape justice. With a busted radiator, Pennsylvania plates and a busted rear window to give them away, the race is on. This 1947 story from Complete Detective Cases sets the stage for these true tales of investigative murder and mayhem from the files of Charles L. Burgess. Also included is Burgess' only short story, "I'll Die for You" from Manhunt magazine. A cornucopia of crime!
