Art And Revolution - Hardcover

by Richard Wagner (Author)

Art and Revolution is a collection of essays and speeches by the German composer Richard Wagner, originally published in 1849. In this book, Wagner discusses the role of art in society and its potential to inspire revolution and bring about social change. He argues that art should not be seen as a mere form of entertainment, but as a powerful tool for political and cultural transformation.Wagner's ideas are rooted in his belief in the importance of national identity and the need for a cultural revolution in Germany. He argues that art should reflect the values and aspirations of the people, and that artists have a responsibility to use their work to inspire social and political change. The book includes essays on various topics, including the relationship between music and drama, the role of the artist in society, and the need for a national opera in Germany. Wagner also discusses his own work, including his opera Rienzi, which he sees as a call to revolution.Art and Revolution is a fascinating insight into the mind of one of the most influential composers of the 19th century. It offers a unique perspective on the role of art in society and the potential for cultural transformation through creative expression. But the greatest peril of all, is that which the author would incur by his frequent use of the word Communism, should he venture into the Paris of to-day with these art-essays in his hand; for he openly proclaims his adherence to this severely scouted category, in contradistinction to Egoism. (6) I certainly believe that the friendly German reader, to whom the meaning of this antithesis will be obvious, will have no special trouble in overcoming the doubt as to whether he must rank me among the partisans of the newest Parisian ""Commune. This scarce antiquarian book is a facsimile reprint of the old original and may contain some imperfections such as library marks and notations.
