by Arnold Lunn (Author)

A Saint In The Slave Trade: Peter Claver 1581-1654 is a biography written by Arnold Lunn that tells the story of Peter Claver, a Jesuit priest who dedicated his life to the service of the slaves in the New World. Born in Spain in 1581, Claver traveled to the Americas in 1610 and spent the next 44 years ministering to the slaves who were brought over from Africa to work in the plantations of the Spanish colonies.Claver's mission was to bring comfort and spiritual guidance to the slaves, who were treated as property and often subjected to brutal treatment by their owners. He learned several African languages in order to communicate with the slaves and was known for his compassion and selflessness in the face of their suffering. Claver also worked to improve the conditions of the slaves, advocating for their rights and speaking out against the injustices of the slave trade.Despite facing opposition from those who profited from the slave trade, Claver continued his mission until his death in 1654. He was later canonized by the Catholic Church as a saint and is revered for his dedication to the cause of social justice.Lunn's book provides a detailed and engaging account of Claver's life and work, drawing on historical records and primary sources to paint a vivid picture of the man and his mission. It is a powerful testament to the enduring legacy of one of the most remarkable figures in the history of the fight against slavery. This scarce antiquarian book is a facsimile reprint of the old original and may contain some imperfections such as library marks and notations.
