by A. L. Mayhew (Author)

Enter the living lexicon of Middle English. Words from an older world. L. Mayhew's A Concise Dictionary of Middle English from A.D. 1150 to 1580 distils the vocabulary of the 12th to 16th century into a compact, readable reference. As a middle english dictionary and historical language reference it brings medieval spellings and senses into focus, offering a practical medieval english glossary for readers who meet manuscripts, marginalia or early printed texts. Ideal for word origins study, for tracing old english vocabulary roots and for following broader patterns of english language evolution, it clarifies how borrowings, dialectal forms and semantic shifts shaped the lexicon. The book's focused, accessible entries make it an attractive oxford english dictionary alternative for projects in british medieval studies, while its comprehensive word collection supports close reading, translation exercises and classroom discussion. Readers appreciate how variant spellings and regional forms are brought together, so a single lemma can be recognised across disparate sources. Compact enough for students, substantial enough for scholars. Beyond immediate utility, its literary and historical significance is notable: the dictionary records the vocabulary of everyday life and specialised registers alike, and so illuminates social history, legal practice, devotional culture and commerce across the medieval centuries. It appeals to both casual readers and classic-literature collectors, providing approachable definitions for the curious and a dependable academic language resource for students of linguistics, editors and historians. Librarians and private collectors will value its provenance and usefulness; undergraduates and researchers will find it clarifies obscure terms, aids paleographic judgement and enriches translation. Teachers can incorporate it into reading lists and seminar packs, while independent readers can use it to decode a single stubborn term. For anyone investigating the sources of a modern phrase or assembling a period reading list, this concise volume bridges rigorous scholarship and readable guidance. Republished by Alpha Editions in a careful modern edition, this volume preserves the spirit of the original while making it effortless to enjoy today - a heritage title prepared for readers and collectors alike.
